Promising Change - A Tanka Trio - Gold Hon. Mention Oct. 8 '97
by Elizabeth Southwood
Golden leaves drift from
trees, marking off Indian
summer. Our inert
cat becomes alert and bats
at a leaf that teases him.
Green magnolia leaves
reflect sun's glare. Window shades
slap against casements.
In indigo dusk, my hair
moves in the streams of cool breeze.
I draw the drapes, put
on a soft slate sweater, turn
on the living room
lamps. A chorus of crickets
sings. Showers are predicted.
