Adrift
I wanted life to be
like tranquilly drifting
on a soothing, jade, translucent sea.
But, while peaceful
as a gull riding wind currents,
I was as if swallowed
by a mountainous wave,
somersaulted and gagged
by gelatin-like water,
scraped against soft gold sand,
bashed against
squid-ink-and-rust-colored rocks,
disgorged when nearly drowned.
Awkward as a crab,
I crawled onto damp, packed sand,
shaking,
gasping for air,
limp as slimy seaweed,
alive,
altered,
scared.
