A Winter Day: Villanelle

A WINTER DAY: VILLANELLE

The gray, branching, buckeye’s bare.
One dusk, unfolding chartreuse
leaves star the darkening air.

Rain paints hills golf-course green where
oak umbrellas’ shadows fuse
the gray, branching, buckeyes bare.

Translucent hues, beauty rare,
showers sweep in, winds transfuse.
Leaves star the darkening air.

Robins “on” firethorn scare
us, crash on glass as they cruise.
The gray, branching, buckeye’s bare.

Mornings the wind-chill factor
dips. Oranges, ice balls, bruise.
Leaves star the darkening air.

Lemons are warped by chill air.
Creeks overflow, mudslides ooze.
The gray, branching buckeye’s bare.
Leaves star the darkening air.
