French Conversation

FRENCH CONVERSATION

He hears her voice now and then,
one of several women,
self-consciously
discussing in French
the unseen-by-him new Paris opera house.
He remembers waiting
to buy a ticket to hear Callas
under a dripping umbrella,
on a rainy afternoon in Paris.

The guests depart
with a finale of “au revoirs.”
She hurries to him,
and pulls down the shades
so the late afternoon sun
won’t be in his eyes.
Their pear tree’s snowdrift bloom
is now hidden from sight.

“I heard of a little gem of a hotel,”
she announces. “Not expensive.”

“Tell me,” he replies gently.
