Blue Moon Vampire Villanelle

BLUE MOON VAMPIRE VILLANELLE

Honeysuckle, pink as sunset in May,
mistaken one midnight for sweet, fresh blood
by the vampire lit in the moon's blue ray.

The honeysuckle looks refreshed next day,
sucks water in and opens rosy buds,
honeysuckle pink as sunset in May.

That evening the owner cuts a bouquet,
is overheard, then softly shoved - a thud -
by the vampire lit in the moon's blue ray.

He sleeps past twelve, makes petit dejeuner
from honeysuckle juice instead of blood,
honeysuckle pink as sunset in May.

His nose morphs into a beak shaped like hay,
and roots in the bloom like a cufflink's stud.
Bye, the vampire lit in the moon's blue ray.

He's a hummingbird, iridescent blue.
He will no longer drink human lifeblood,
honeysuckle-pink as sunset in May.
Bye, the vampire lit in the moon's blue ray.
